The Ropes. I wish that is all I had to say. It should be. The Ropes are real and unreal at the same time. No one else sounds like The Ropes. I cannot overstate the power of this music. Scientists have discovered that music and its associations are remembered even after one has forgotten everything else. Alzheimer’s patients who cannot remember their names or the people they once knew, remember the music they love when played for them. They remember the words to the songs. And they remember how to dance. Music is deeply emotional. The Ropes have taken this power of music to the outer limits and beyond. Toppy, The Ropes guitarist, (he plays a number of instruments as well, including drums) has taken that hunk of wood and strings and has created a new sound. I hate having to write about it because it has to be heard. It is thrilling. You will want to turn the volume all the way up. Focus on the sounds. Understand its mysteries. Where does this sound come from? It is musical sculpture. It is poetry in sound. Sometimes beautiful. Sometimes violent. Always exciting. Sharon Shy, The Ropes singer/songwriter possess the most beautiful haunting voice you will ever ever ever ever hear. Her voice will follow you. It will stay in your head. Phrases will pop into your brain. You will find yourself emotionally drained and will come back for more and more and more. The lyrics are sophisticated and defiant.
