The alleged hip hop resume

It's amazing how the perspective of rappers have changed over the years. It has gone from kids from all walks of life freestyling for fun outside of school to your average drug dealer or badass kid thinking his only way of redemption and quick cash is to make a temporary club banger with transparent meaning. Seriously, wtf does it say that in order to qualify as a rapper you must be hood or of hood descent and committed a minimum of two felonies and/or misdemeanors? Is it an automatic "REJECTED" stamp if a kid from some generic suburb has enough creativity to come up with some interesting rhymes not related to death, hos, or cash? And yes, I had rappers like Drake and Diggy in mind when thinking about this.

Yes, many think Drake is overrated mainly due to his Young Money affiliation, but there's no mistaking his lyrical ability. But then the comments come in like "dude was an actor first, he don't know how to be gangsta, shyyyiiit," and "he doesn't know real struggle because of where he's from. He's trying to be something he's not," I want to backhand my computer screen. Trust me, I'm not crazy about the YM camp either, but I don't think he's trying to be something he never stated he was. His rhymes are about how good he is, what he had to do to get here, family, life, and the occasional ho or two _.

And Diggy automatically gets the skeptic eye because of his daddy and the Run DMC empire. So he was born into wealth, so his family had a reality show, that only means we should expect no rhymes about bitches, ghettos, or drugs. And honestly, isn't that a good thing? His father may have gotten him through the door but he has the artillery to handle his own ground now. Seriously, listen to his mixtape, and you'll soon see that you have no room for doubt after his lyrics fill up your cranium. After all, it doesn't matter how you got through the door, as long as you're able to silence everyone with your talents once you enter the room.

So I hope this silenced some of those haters and single-minders out there. And if it didn't, oh well. It helped me =].
