Statesboro Music: iff

Since their first concert in April, iff(if and only if), have been slowly climbing towards the top tier of the local rock scene in Statesboro, Georgia. As the band created a small following from their initial performance, they proceeded with much ambition to create a demo CD entitled the Homegrown Demo. My only qualm with the demo was the production quality, which has become increasingly difficult with the lack of studio knowledge and availability in the area. ‘One-Dimension’ is the track to check out if you’re hunting down something to tie towards the band lyrically. It features lyrics inspired by political observations pertaining to the cyclical patterns of war and advancements in technology and industry that are linked to one another. Instrumentally the song embodies the “Aggressive Stoner Rock” title that they have earned; featuring a heavy, low-tuned guitar and a relentless assault on the drums that prospectively rival any sound around. My personal favorite song from the demo was ‘Elucidate’ because the time changes in the song seem so fitting. There aren’t many lyrics in the song, but there is a constant build-up of emotion throughout the song that is expressed amazingly well both vocally and instrumentally. I was able to catch the live show on July 30, and this band is infinitely better than their demo allows. iff debuted a new song at their concert, ‘Without Opposition’ which might be their best song yet. There is much potential in this band, and I would highly recommend getting on board before they move on to bigger and better things. Be sure to check them out in Savannah at the Jinx with Ammon and Unnamed on August 21.
