The nicotiana benthamiana strain of tobacco is being engineered to speed flu vaccine production by engineering bacteria to possess flu markers,than washing it over the tobacco plant causing it to produce the flu proteins. Manufacturers then grind up the leaves,extract the the protein which is then readied for injection. The process is one quarter the cost and three times faster than conventional means of vaccine production. Texas A&M along with pharmaceutical manufacturer G-Con has received a forty million dollar grant from Darpa's one-hundred million dollar initiative called Project Greenvax. Scientists also think this approach could produce treatment for people already sick.Biologists have demonstrated a tobacco produced treatment to cure West Nile virus in mice. Homeopathic developed medicines produced from plants are gaining a foothold on money spent on research.This fast growing and cheap to grow form of tobacco efficiently accepts foriegn DNA and will someday replace vaccine production from chicken eggs as millions of dose could be produced in four weeks instead of six months...
