On Tuesday 26th July, 2011 my partner and I were down in the capital for a band ‘Itamar’ I’ve been wanting to catch for a while now. It was £5 entry for us, on the guest list(!) at the Camden Barfly to see a trio of indie pop/rock bands.
At 8pm the place was packed out for first band ‘The Great Hereafter’ with a complete mix of young student types and older musician types with much older faces. After the first song the band asked everybody to step closer to the stage, and, everybody did! I thought to myself ‘why isn’t it like this in my local area?’ As the set continued enthusiastic whoops and clapping was maintained by the crowd. Some singing along, others, just bopping along. At this point I figured that maybe, fairly, that is why all the big record companies’ support is down in London - because that’s generally where ALL the support is! I genuinely felt excited and part of something being there; it was great, all enthusiasm and support, no drunken heckling or abuse (though that’s hardly surprising at £3.90 for a pint of Guinness!)
Next up were ‘The Sunday Skyclub’ who had travelled from Exeter for the gig tonight. I looked around at the crowd as they were explaining how tired they were after their crappy journey up on the Mega Bus, and the place was practically empty. They must have been as excited as I was for the rest of the gig after seeing the crowds initial reaction. I was gutted for them. I must say they weren’t as polished as the first band up, though the drumming was fabulous! It’s not like the crowd decided they didn’t want to hang around for this band based on their playing though - they just weren’t there from the start. I was so disappointed to see such apathy after such a promising start.
We’d travelled down from Derby for this gig, there was no way I was missing any of it! It’s such a shame the way the crowd, mostly, were just showing support obviously for their friends - it’s not a competition - it’s a get-together in celebration! I know this has been touched on before in articles, but really the difference in the support between these two bands, at the same venue, with supposedly the same audience was immense and palpable, and really shocked me, at this venue with such a reputation too!
Moving on, to who we were there to see, ‘Itamar’ headlining tonight, managed to pull some more of the crowd back in from the downstairs bar (drinks weren’t cheaper downstairs or anything!). I actually recognised a couple of guys from the first band there milling about again (oh, nice of you to joins us!) Also there, still, were the guys and gal from ‘The Sunday Skyclub’ so special mention to them!
I was glad we’d made the trip out to see Itamar as their songs were more engaging which pleased me. Opener ‘You Were Right’ caught our attention immediately and was probably familiar to anybody who had checked them out before on MySpace or Facebook, or anyone who, without realising it has heard them played on Kerrang or Radio 1.
Their live set was a bit more heavier than I was expecting to be honest, which I enjoyed, and, again the drumming really stood out for me. Tonights’ gig was a release for their latest EP featuring ‘Step On It’, a real positive-thinking inducing song about taking your chance, because who knows what tomorrow will bring. Good advice that should be heeded by all!

I'm sitting here, writing this, in my Metalloid T-shirt that I bought after seeing the band last night. Metalloid were headlining an all-day event at The Old Bell in Derby: Metal vs Pop-Punk Opening with Ignorantia to prove that metal does indeed come out on top! Following this with classic Soar Like An Eagle which invites a little crowd participation! I was dancing with some randomers who had just come in off the street and didn't know anything about the event beforehand. They were really getting into it! One was a COMPLETE nutter, but that's another story for a different day....
Half-way through, the performance was paused for Pete Morten, the lead singer, to announce that, sadly, this was the drummers last gig with the band. Awarding Morgan Pettigrew with a bunch of flowers that were proudly displayed on his drum set to chants from the crowd, and a deserved uproarious round of applause! Take care dude, and Thank You for the good times!
Back on with the show! With The Expositor and Time Train which really got the crowd going, and made those that were still there after all this time realise that it was worth hanging around for! I wasn't the only one Powerdriven that night!(See back of T-shirt for details!) Talking to said randomers afterwards, Daniel; Wayne & Will, about how good the band had been. They were telling me how much they'd enjoyed the show.
They asked me: "Who are they?"
I told them: "They're Metalloid!"
